Welcome to The University of Northern British Columbia, in Prince George! As the name says, we are located in north-central BC, where the Nechako and Fraser rivers meet, in the heart of the traditional territory of the Carrier-Sekani. Our geographic isolation and winter climate make us unique and provide for unique challenges!
UNBC has a small but vibrant campus community with numerous food related projects, such as a University Farmer’s Market, the locally-sourced Good Food Box program, and BC Foods Day. We have dedicated faculty actively involved in food-systems research within the community, and a fantastic administrative staff supportive of UNBC’s mandate of “Canada’s Green University”.
Because of its geographic isolation, Prince George and UNBC face unique food-system challenges; food-security, agricultural viability, and awareness are all prominent issues in Prince George, contributing to the dynamic of the UNBC food system.
The Campus Food Systems Coordinators, Nitha and Daniel, are working to support these projects and reach out to the campus community to increase literacy and awareness surrounding food! We’re working to partner existing groups both on and off campus, supporting current initiatives and the local food economy. By encouraging and facilitating dialogue amongst stakeholders, we aim to create a vibrant community surrounding food and build on the incredible successes already achieved.

Hello,
My name is Saam Nasirpour from the Capilano Students’ Union. I am currently chairing the Food and Beverage Committee at Capilano, we are a group of students that are dedicated to seeing a change in how food is served at our University. It seems like UNBC has a pretty good system in place and if you don’t mind, I had a few questions about food services at UNBC.
First of all is there a third party organization running the cafeteria (chartwells, sodexo, aramark, etc) ? And if so is there (or was there ever) an exclusivity contracts?
Who operates the farmers market?
Are there student run food services?
Thank you for your time,
Saam
